The Whole Package: How we carry the message of South Ormsby Estate into our Massingberd-Mundy Packaging

By now, we hope you are aware of and have maybe even tried our delicious Lincoln Red Beef and our award-winning gins. Whilst we talk frequently about the quality of our products, we also thought it was about time we tell you about the carefully designed packaging we use for our products. As the home of Massingberd-Mundy, South Ormsby Estate uses environmentally friendly techniques and ensures we operate as sustainably as possible, so it was important that our packaging upheld these principles.

In addition, we wanted to link our products to the heritage of the Estate. As the Massingberd-Mundy family owned the estate for several generations, all our products feature their family crest.

Whilst the packaging has continuity across our range with the design style, colours, and message, there are some distinct and interesting differences between them. Read on to find out more about the packaging for each product.

Lincoln Red Beef

The beef packaging was the first one we worked on and the idea was to create a set of illustrations that represented life on the estate, so it includes a range of animals and plants that have resulted in a country life feel. The tissue paper that goes inside each beef box is covered in animal and plant life you can find at South Ormsby Estate including sheep, cows, geese, and flowers.

As the beef needs to remain chilled in transit, we use insulation made from 100% felted sheep’s wool inside the boxes as well. Not only does this minimise plastic use but the insulation can be recycled in a multitude of ways. Suggestions for reuse include animal bedding, draft excluders, pipe insulation and even shoe insoles.

The shipping box has the phrase ‘South Ormsby Estate to your doorstep’ printed on it as traceability is important to us and we have adopted a farm to fork policy where all our beef can be traced back to which cow it came from and even where on South Ormsby Estate they grazed.

Massingberd-Mundy Gin

A similar set of illustrations were then created for the Massingberd-Mundy gin packaging but using the botanicals that are used to flavour the gins instead. The result is tissue paper adorned with citrus fruits, elderflower, apples, and cinnamon sticks. Every bottle is wrapped in this paper, which is held in place at the neck of the bottle with brown string.

The gin bottles themselves are based on Charles Massingberd-Mundy and Marie Jeanne Rapigeon of Versailles. Copies of their original portraits from South Ormsby Hall are a main feature of each bottle and can be seen through the front of the glass.

When packaged ready for shipping, each bottle is sleeved in a honeycomb paper structure which acts like bubble wrap but can be recycled after use. Then there is the main shipping box itself which can be unfolded and popped in the recycling too.

Massingberd-Mundy Aprons

The most recent packaging set we worked on were the illustrations for our country kitchen themed items. The tissue paper is wrapping the Massingberd-Mundy aprons which have just been released for pre-order and features a variety of kitchen utensils.
