A Week on the Estate: Windy Milling, Victoria’s Visit & Nationwide Beef

This post is over 90 days old and may contain outdated information, links or references.

‘N’er cast a clout till may is out’ goes the old British saying. ‘Clout’ refers to warm clothing but ‘May’ doesn’t meant the month; it means the blossom of the hawthorn. As hawthorn can bloom at any point between mid-April and mid-June, the saying isn’t too far off when misread. Either way, our weather is as fickle as ever. Friday’s forecast temperature range of 16C-10C will fall to 10C-3C by Monday, so we’ll be keeping our clouts close to hand.

We continue to develop our relationship with local millers. Joshua and Charlie thoroughly enjoyed a working visit to Waltham Windmill near Grimsby. Joshua worked on our Pulses & Grains project with Paul and got a kick out of seeing our organic Ladum spring wheat being milled and turned into flour the old-fashioned way.  As well as hosting us at their magnificent mill, the team from Waltham visited the Estate to collect some of our organic spring wheat. This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. We’re certainly keen to exchange our grain for wholegrain flour produced locally and traditionally.

At South Ormsby Hall, Jon was delighted to host the Rt Hon Victoria Atkins, MP for Louth and Horncastle. They each enjoyed a cool glass of milk and Jon gave Ms Atkins a tour of the currently empty Hall where major improvement works are soon to begin.

“As a proud member of the South Ormsby community, I think it’s important that I help improve our area and support our elected representative,” said Jon. “My recent meeting with Victoria Atkins MP was not just about discussing what our MP can do for us, but also about how we at South Ormsby can help her to drive positive change.

“One example is the comprehensive sustainability plan we’re developing for South Ormsby Estate. By implementing eco-friendly practices, promoting sustainable tourism and helping our community with environmental stewardship, we’re taking concrete steps to preserve our natural heritage for future generations. This not only benefits our local environment but also sets an example for other communities to follow.

“At South Ormsby Estate, we’re building a thriving local economy. We’re working hard on initiatives to support local businesses, create job opportunities and attract investment to our area. By taking the lead in these efforts, we can help our MP to build a stronger, more prosperous community.

“I’m excited about the potential for South Ormsby to be a catalyst for positive change, and I’m grateful to all the members of the community who are helping us in this endeavour. If you haven’t discovered us yet, jump in and get involved. Together, we can make a real difference.”

Speaking of rural commerce, we want YOUR opinion on our beef. If you’ve tried Massingberd-Mundy Lincoln Red beef or would like to, we need to hear from you. We’re considering making Lincoln Red beef available for nationwide delivery in addition to our existing click & collect service. We’d be shipping fresh, chilled meat by overnight courier to customers across the mainland UK.

Does the prospect of nationwide, home delivery of fresh Lincoln Red beef appeal to you? Would it make it more likely that you’d buy our beef? Do you prefer fresh to frozen or vice versa. Any and all opinions are most welcome. Comment below the featured post on our Facebook page HERE.

Finally, we’re looking for several Graduate Trainees for one-year, fixed-term contracts.  Are you a recent graduate with a willingness to work hard? Would you like to get hands-on with a range of job types and perhaps discover the one career that will grip you for life? If this is you – or you know someone who fits the bill – read on.

The South Ormsby Estate Graduate Training Scheme offers recent graduates the chance to apply their talent and enthusiasm to all aspects of our work. We don’t require any specific degree subject, but the successful candidate will be able and willing to make their mark in the various business enterprises that call South Ormsby Estate home. We particularly welcome applications from our local community in keeping with our commitment to reinvigorating the economy of East Lincolnshire.

The areas of work our graduates experience in a typical one-year placement include (but aren’t limited to):

– Business Management & Leadership

– Residential & Commercial Property Management

– Travel & Tourism

– Heritage-Breed Cattle & Poultry Management

– Commercial Sales & Marketing

We encourage entrepreneurial thinking. If at the end of their year a graduate can pitch us a compelling new business idea, we may well decide to back them and let them run with it.  We want our region’s young talent to carry our vision into the future, so long-term opportunities will always be on the table.
