Lincolnshire Day Celebrating Lincolnshire Heritage

The first Lincolnshire Day was on the 1st October 2006 it was voted for by Lincolnshire Life Magazine readers and Radio Lincolnshire listeners to commemorate the Lincolnshire Rising in 1536. Now the 1st of October is the day when we celebrate everything Lincolnshire including Lincolnshire history, food and drink, and tell people what an amazing county we live in.

The Lincolnshire Rising began at St James Church Louth, not too far away from South Ormsby Estate, when Thomas Kendall, vicar of Louth church, preached an inflammatory sermon because King Henry VIII was dissolving the monasteries and claiming the monasteries’ land.  The common people weren’t happy about this. The Rising fell apart on the 11th of October and Thomas Kendall was hung, drawn, and quartered at Tyburn in March 1537 for his part in the uprising.

Here at South Ormsby Estate, we are proud of our heritage and history stretching back to the 14th Century when Sir William Skipworth bought the land at Ormsby. In 1638 Sir Drayner Massingberd bought the estate. Read more about the history of the estate here.

Lincolnshire Food and Drink

Lincolnshire is the second-largest county in England and a large part of Lincolnshire’s economy is based around agriculture and food production.  Here at South Ormsby Estate we produce high-quality Pasture for Life certified Lincoln Red Beef, small-batch artisan gin, free-range heritage turkeys, and Lincolnshire Buff Chickens. All our meat is raised to high welfare standards the same as organic standards, as we are at present going through organic conversion.

Our award-winning gin use botanicals and fruit from the estate. Our products are packed in environmental packaging, our beef boxes use wool cool,  insulation made from felted sheep’s fleece, which can be reused in many different ways.

At South Ormsby Estate we breed traditional Lincolnshire livestock, Lincoln Red Cattle, and Lincolnshire Buff Chickens, this helps increase the numbers of these Lincolnshire breeds. Another traditional Lincolnshire farm animal is the Lincolnshire Longwool Sheep, however, we don’t have any of these on the estate.

South Ormsby Estate is situated in the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds near Louth.  Lincolnshire has the reputation of being flat, however, anyone who has walked up Steep Hill in Lincoln or visited the Lincolnshire Wolds would tell you that not all Lincolnshire is flat. The Lincolnshire Wolds is designated an Area of Outstanding  Natural Beauty and consists of picturesque rolling hills, market towns, quaint villages, and open countryside. The Lincolnshire Wolds is the perfect place to visit if you like walking and at the estate, we have walks of varying lengths from 1 mile to more than 10 miles, you can download the walks from our website.
