Lincolnshire Day Celebrating Lincolnshire Heritage
The first Lincolnshire Day was on the 1st October 2006 it was voted for by Lincolnshire Life Magazine readers and Radio Lincolnshire listeners to commemorate the Lincolnshire Rising in 1536. Now the 1st of October is the day when we celebrate everything Lincolnshire including Lincolnshire history, food and drink, and tell people what an amazing county we live in.
The Lincolnshire Rising began at St James Church Louth, not too far away from South Ormsby Estate, when Thomas Kendall, vicar of Louth church, preached an inflammatory sermon because King Henry VIII was dissolving the monasteries and claiming the monasteries’ land. The common people weren’t happy about this. The Rising fell apart on the 11th of October and Thomas Kendall was hung, drawn, and quartered at Tyburn in March 1537 for his part in the uprising.
Here at South Ormsby Estate, we are proud of our heritage and history stretching back to the 14th Century when Sir William Skipworth bought the land at Ormsby. In 1638 Sir Drayner Massingberd bought the estate. Read more about the history of the estate here.
