A Week on the Estate: Organic September, Electric Wheels & Gin Returns

This post is over 90 days old and may contain outdated information, links or references.

Meteorological autumn is here but nobody’s told the weather. At the time of writing, we have blue skies and daily highs of 27C. Temperatures will rise and peak over the weekend and more seasonable conditions are set to resume by the middle of next week. In a now-familiar pattern, we’ll see a 10C temperature drop in a matter of days.

It’s Organic September and Harvest 2023 is done and dusted. We’re proud to stand alongside the many farmers working hard to feed the nation while boosting biodiversity and ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare. We believe we can produce the food our community needs while protecting and improving the health of our natural environment, from the microfauna in the soil to the red kites riding the thermals over our pastures.

Achieving organic status for animal and arable produce and having our regenerative farming model recognised by the Pasture for Life Association are achievements of which we’re proud. Our farming improves and maintains a healthy soil biome, able to absorb more water and carbon, and helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We fertilise our land with organic manure from our livestock and natural nitrate fixers such as legumes and clover. We don’t use synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. We maintain the highest standards of welfare for all our livestock.

None of this is cheap or easy, but we think it’s important. When you buy our fine Lincolnshire produce, you’re supporting a low-carbon, wildlife-friendly farming model as well as good local jobs. Thankyou!

outdoor work

Speaking of rural affairs, our hard-working Estate staff and volunteers have found all sorts of jobs to do out on the land. Seth helped some game volunteers pull yet more ragwort out of the parkland and grazing fields wherever it might present a hazard to livestock. All volunteers, young and old, were briefed thoroughly on the safe handling of ragwort.

Out on the pastures Darren and Jack enjoyed a training session on the quad bike and our brand-new, all-electric ATV from Electric Wheels. Thanks go out to course tutor Richard Hammond and Sophie Wrisdale of East Lincs Rural Training.

Damian checked in on the new vineyard and photographed many well-established and flourishing grape vines. Jacqui Rhodes also got out and about with her camera and capture some wild drama. As red kites circled above a sunny pasture, Jacqui found and photographed the object of their interest: a squirrel hurriedly moving her kits to safer quarters. There’s plenty of drama out there if you sit, wait and watch.

vines & gin

Finally, we hear that good things come to those who wait. While stocks last, Burrell’s Dry Gin, Marie Jeanne Pink Gin and very limited numbers of our special editions* are available now from the Massingberd-Mundy Distillery. Click HERE to order yours**.

We know our customers have been patient and it was high time we showed our appreciation. The last gin distilled by Tristan back in June has matured and passed the taste-test with top marks. We also had to ensure that our staff were properly licensed to bottle and sell it.

We can now reunite you with Tristan’s craft gins while we finalise plans for the next stage. When it comes to recruiting a new distiller, we know our gin aficionados expect the best and that’s what we intend to give you. Look out for more news later this autumn.

In the meantime, raise a glass to Daria and Anton for their hard work in bringing Massingberd-Mundy gins back to a drinks cabinet near you.  Cheers!

If you’d like to join the conversation, we’d love to hear from you. Just head to our Facebook page HERE and comment beneath the latest blog post. As ever, thanks for your support.

* Special editions include Botanical Spirit, Blood Orange, Winter Berry, Oak Aged & Nettle Infused.

**We’ll dispatch gin orders twice weekly on the next Tuesday or Thursday after the order date. Orders will be dispatched via DPD’s next-day service. Most orders will therefore be delivered on Wednesday or Friday.
